                 WHAT ABOUT PARABENS!

One of the latest public health concerns is the effects of parabens and other chemicals on our health. A 2004 English study published in the Journal for Applied Toxicology found minute amounts of paraben in breast tumor tissue samples.
Since parabens are known to mimic estrogen, this paper suggests a connection between the presence of parabens in the breast tissue and breast cancer.

Later that same year a Japanese study presented at the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists voiced further concerns over the related chemical methylparaben.

The Hospital in Spain has proposed a possible link between parabens and breast cancer, after finding increased levels of environmental parabens in breast tissue removed from cancer patients. This study cited cosmetics as one of the most common sources of the absorbed chemicals.

San Francisco Breast Cancer Action has requested consumers not to use products from Avon and Ester Lauder, because of their use of parabens. Those companies claimed that they were not satisfied with study results and want further studies before banning parabens.

But with breast cancer on the rise and the recent discovery that parabens mimic the female hormone estrogen, we need to start questioning the safety of our beauty products. Other paraben preservatives starting with methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl have milder estrogenic properties but should also be used with caution. And many of these chemicals are disguised in brand name preservatives, i.e.: Germaben II and Phenonip to name two.

So why are parabens so widely used? The simple answer is money and greed. Parabens are economical and act as a broad spectrum preservative, including a fungus preservative. The European Union is now restricting products coming into Europe that contain paraben. Since the American cosmetic market sells millions of dollars in cosmetics, it will be the European Union that forces our country to clean up our products. Or possibly those products containing parabens will only be sold in the U.S., and Europe will demand only pareben-free products be sold in Europe.

Recently, in the United States, preservatives that are free of paraben, formaldehyde donors and isothiazolnes are starting to become more common. Cosmocil CQ and Optiphen Plus have been proven safe for applications that must pass the FDA’s strictest testing. Cosmocil CQ has been approved for use in contact lens solutions.
